With a small enough hyperdrive and a long enough distance, it can be slow enough you'd RATHER travel sublight, cause you'll get there sooner. Hyperdrive takes up an obnoxious amount of per-ship space if you want reasonable speeds out of it early on, but it's also the only FTL method that gets faster as the game goes on (with thrust research). Fling beacons are also unarmed and have fixed statistics, wheras you can design gate stations, and pack them up then move them around slowly or quicker with a tractor beam. Gates and Fling beacons are quite different.įling beacons cost quite a lot of money maintenence, I'd say more than gates for all but the hugest and beefiest of gate stations. Nowadays, you'd only pick it for the extra challenge.
It seems to be a holdover from when race traits cost points - picking Sublight got you -3 points that you could then spend on buying other positive benefits.
